Deviant Cellular and Physiological Responses to Exercise in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Frank N.M. Twisk*, Keith J. Geraghty

Post-exertional “malaise”, a (prolonged) aggravation of symptoms after a minor exertion, is a discriminative symptom of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). Several abnormalities observed in ME/CFS, such as a prolonged fall in oxygen uptake after exercise, and a post-exertional increase in metabolite-detecting (pain) receptors, can plausibly account for “exercise intolerance” reported by ME/CFS patients and the lack of the success of rehabilitation protocols.

Trees, Tusks, and Roots Relating to Human Health and Teeth

Louis Z.G. Touyz*

The gist of this article discusses the effect of trees and roots on human health and teeth. The further people are removed from natural wooded environs, the worse is the prevalence of anti-social behavior in that society. The calming therapeutic effect of nature on mentally disturbed individuals is deconstructed and explained through evolution. Human health and oral hygiene, the miswaak, detergent chews, archaeology and selected animals that use their teeth to survive using trees, are considered.

Extracellular vesicles and biomineralization

Kenneth Simkiss*

At the end of the last millennium the concept of the cell membrane had been modified from that of a container and physical  barrier to include the function of a regulating and transducing organelle. Initially it was the impact of electrophysiology that changed the approach but then the universality of calcium signalling was recognised] and the observation emerged that evolution had adapted the positively charged calcium cation and the negatively charged phosphate anion as the two primary signalling elements of cells. Calcium alone was found to bind thousands of different proteins, with consequent effects on the understanding of cell functions. That was quite a revolution but it is certainly not the only one.

Does The Etiology of The Heart Failure Influence The Presence of The Sleep Apnoea Syndrome?

Y. Jarmoune- I. Bensahi*- A. Elhammiri- K. Hafdi- L. Azzouzi- R. Habbal

Many previous studies have shown the intercurrent association between the heart failure and the sleep apnea syndrome. (SAS) the SAS prevalence in the heart failure was estimated between 47% and 76 %. This disturbing rate is explained by several factors. The aim of our study is to determine the possible association between the etiology of the heart failure and the SAS‘s presence.

Influence of Periodontal β1 IgG on The Antioxidant Enzyme System in Rat Atria Myocardium

Sabrina Ganzinelli, Enri Borda*

In this paper we demonstrate that circulating antibodies from serum of periodontitis patients presenting atria β1 adrenoceptors (AR) induce changes upon antioxidant superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) enzymes and the release of nitrites during early hypoxia. We also demonstrate the existence of reactivity against the second extracellular loop of human myocardial β1 AR by means of the ELISA, using the β1 synthetic peptide with an amino acid sequence identical to that of the second loop of human myocardial β1 AR as a coating antigen.
